WORK to demolish Bournemouth’s former Royal Mail sorting office is continuing in the town centre.
The green light was given last year to knock down the deteriorating building, which fell in to disrepair after the Post Office – open since 1896 – moved to WH Smith in 2008.
The Post Office itself became a Pizza Express restaurant.
Currently, there is permission to build a six-storey building with 83 flats and two commercial units on the site. However, in January this year a new application was submitted, with an extra storey, in a bid to make some of the apartments, of which there would still be 83, bigger.
This has attracted some objections, including from Father Bruce Barnes, of the neighbouring Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
A decision on the new proposal will be made by April 12, Bournemouth Borough Council said.
