AN inspirational teen from Bournemouth who endured cancer, disability and savage bullying is bidding to defy the odds and run a marathon.

Chandos Green was just three years old when medics found a tumour the size of a golf ball in his brain, with the resulting surgery leaving the left side of his body severely weakened – permanently impacting his ability to walk and move his left arm.

The cancer returned after he started school and despite again beating it, he was ridiculed by classmates who taunted him with jibes such as “tumour boy” and berated him for his appearance on a daily basis.

Struggling to face up to his disability, the bullying and feeling like he was living in a nightmare, in 2010, Chandos attempted suicide.

In the proceeding years and armed with a new perspective after visiting children in need in Ethiopia, he has dedicated his life to helping other youngsters cope with cancer by undertaking a series of projects to help raise money for charity.

Last summer, after 12 years in remission, Chandos started experiencing intense headaches and dizziness while away at university in Chichester – and received the heartbreaking news that the tumour was growing again.

The social work student pledged then, that whatever happened, he would set himself the target of running the London Marathon in 2015.

“I swore to myself I’d finish it even if I had to struggle round in a wheelchair, even if I had to walk half the way,” said Chandos, now 19.

“I want to prove to myself and to everybody else that when you put your mind to it anything is possible.

“The training has been tough – when I started I didn’t realise quite how hard it would be, but I remind myself of why I am doing it and just keep going.”

The four-and-half hour surgery to remove the cancer last year is thought to have been successful.

An MRI scan in January revealed there may still be a tiny segment of the tumour remaining, but doctors have expressed their optimism that what they can see may be scar tissue and future checks are planned.

Chandos is running for Children with Cancer UK.
