DORSET police say criminals are conning vulnerable people out of thousands of pounds after tricking them into thinking they have won a lottery.

The force is urging residents to be aware following reports of a scam mostly targeting elderly people.

A force spokesman said criminals approach their victim via letter or email saying they have won a prize or substantial amounts of money but they need to pay a fee before receiving their winnings.

The spokesman said: “This fee could be to pay taxes or duty, or for a solicitor, banker or judge to authorise the transaction.

“Often this first fee will be small, but once they know you are willing to pay it they will ask for more and more money, with ever-changing excuses as to why they need it.

“Victims can end up losing tens of thousands of pounds over the course of months or even years.”

Anyone who believes they have been a victim should contact Dorset Police on 101.
