A COMMUNITY radio station is looking for new financial backers after its current charity funding was described as ‘unsustainable’.

In a letter written by Colin Hartland, executive director of Bournemouth YMCA, he explains how the support given to Hope FM, based in Bournemouth YMCA Delta House on Westover Road, has ‘been considered as the missional focus of the association’.

Mr Hartland went on to say: “Within recent times we have experienced inevitable declining trends which have directly impacted on income generation which sadly is so necessary in running Hope FM.”

Colin said that although this is nothing new, over the years Bournemouth YMCA has always covered any exposure to enable the station to continue running.

“However, last month we were put on notice of a very substantial decrease in local government funding which now impacts directly upon our core charitable work and hugely on our overall budget.

“Following prayer, and with a very heavy heart, the Trustees of Bournemouth YMCA have concluded that continued support of Hope FM as previously undertaken is now unfortunately unsustainable.”

However, Kevin Potter, station manager of Hope FM, said: “I am very positive about this news and it is not because I am putting on a brave face.

“We are not shutting down, we are merely changing trustees. As long as I am here, we will continue running.”

Kevin said that as the only radio station based in Bournemouth which works on a community basis, they rely on residents’ support.
