A MAN died after plunging from the roof of the multi-storey car park in Weymouth.

Emergency services attended the scene earlier this afternoon following reports that someone had fallen into Lower St Alban Street.

The incident happened at around 12.30pm. Police received reports that a man had been found injured.

The road was partially closed whilst paramedics worked at the scene. The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance was scrambled and landed on the harbourside close to the incident.

However, the man, believed to be local, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the death is not believed to be suspicious and the coroner has been informed.

One bystander said: “He was in a very bad way when the first people got to him. The emergency services were here very quickly but it appears there was nothing they could do.”

Laura Mills, who lives on Commercial Road, said: “I am shocked to hear about this. You never expect anything like this to happen outside your own front door. My thoughts go out to the man’s friends and family.”

Mike Fairchild, a resident from West Street, arrived whilst emergency services were still at the scene. He was told to park his car elsewhere whilst the road remained closed.

He said: “I’ve only lived here for six months.

“I heard a while ago that a woman fell from there and she died.

“I was obviously coming home and this road was barred off. The police wouldn’t tell me what was going on.”

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “At 12.34pm Dorset Police received a report that a man had been found injured at the bottom of a multi-storey car park along Commercial Road in Weymouth.

“Officers and the ambulance service attended. Sadly the man, believed to be local, was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have not been notified yet but the coroner has been made aware.

“The incident is not believed be suspicious but officers are still looking into the exact circumstance.”

Cllr Joy Stanley, who represents the Melcombe Regis ward for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said she was saddened by the news.

She said: “Obviously my sympathies go to the family and friends and all those who know him.

“I just think it’s a very sad thing. We don’t really know exactly what it was.

“It’s a private car park. The people that own it could be asked to put some fencing up to prevent this thing from happening.

“It does need doing.”

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident or those with any information to get in contact via 101 and quoting incident number 20:130.
