FAST and furious games of Frisbee flew up the beach at Sandbanks as the inaugural Baby It's Cold Outside tournament lived up to its title.

Ten teams of five players battled it out on three pitches in the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on Sunday, with skilful team members fighting the wind which threatened to whip the plastic discs away.

Poole's local club In The Zone had two teams taking part, competing with those from Winchester, Bournemouth University, Devon and four GB teams, both men and women.

“We are really pleased to have four GB teams here,” said tournament director Gary Edwards from In The Zone.

This was a warm up for the world championships in Dubai in March but they were not having it all their own way.

“We've had a couple of upsets,” said Gary. “One of the GB teams has been beaten, the women's, by In The Zone. That was a bit of a scalp no-one was expecting.”

Teams play for 20 minutes on the sand, passing the Frisbee and aiming to get it into the opponents zone at the end to score. Players cannot move, only pivot when in possession, and have 10 seconds to pass the disc on.

“Most people pick it up when they are at university,” said Gary - however there are masters competitions for over-40s as well as mixed teams.

There had previously been a tournament held at Poole but when the organisers moved away the local team decided to put on an event which they intend will become annual.

“Normally Frisbee tournaments are going on every single weekend, even new year,” said Gary. That along with the difficulty of staging a tournament on the popular sandy beach in the busy summer, led to the January date.

“We've had a lot of people stopping to watch,” added Gary.
