FIFTY skaters have been injured at the BIC’s Cool Coast ice rink since it opened for business on December 13, it has been revealed.

Just four of the injuries have involved either a fracture or the need for an ambulance with 46 minor injuries so far.

In the latest incident an ambulance was called on Saturday, January 3 after a female skater fell.

Safety marshalls cordoned off the area until paramedics had arrived to deal with the incident.

A spokesman for the Bournemouth International Centre said the rink has welcomed 17,145 skaters so far this season and that those injury figures – at just 0.2 per cent – are in fact comparable to industry trends.

She said: “If an incident occurs, Ice Marshalls will make an initial assessment and, when necessary, alert the Ice Rink Supervisor and the venue’s Duty Management Team.

“All incidents are attended to and recorded and they are then reviewed by our health and safety and operations team,” she added.

“Safety Marshalls are first aid trained and receive first response training at the beginning of every season.

“The ice rink team is supported by the venue’s operations team who are also qualified in first aid.”

An official opening ceremony was performed last month by Elsa and Anna, characters from Disney’s Frozen. The rink will remain open until Sunday, February 22, the end of the half term break.
