MOTORISTS are reminded to expect delays along Hamworthy’s busy Blandford Road next week as five week gas mains project gets started.
The work is to replace the existing metal gas main with a modern plastic pipe that has a lifespan of around 80 years.
SGN construction manager Alan Thompson explained: “We have attended this area a number of times in the past few years to carry out repairs and a permanent solution is now required.”
A section of Blandford Road was closed in December, to allow engineers to work on repairing the latest gas leak affecting the area.
The mains replacement project, starting on January 19, takes place between the double mini-roundabout at Poole Road, and just south of Yarrells Lane.
While work continues, a southbound lane closure with signposted diversion will be implemented.
Upton ward councillor Fred Drane told the Daily Echo: “It is anybody’s guess how bad it is going to be, but it will be bad. Five weeks is a long time and the amount of traffic using this road is huge.”
Meanwhile, Mr Thompson confirmed contractors will work extended hours, seven days a week, to complete the project as soon as possible.
He added: “We are mindful though that this is a largely residential area and our hours of operation have been agreed with the local authority.
“We understand that roadworks can be frustrating and we’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused.
“We would like to thank everyone for their patience while we carry out our essential works.”
