TALBOT Primary School had some unusual visitors when the Writing Witches flew in to share their secret spells for magical story writing with the children.

The Writing Witches, from Bournemouth University’s Fresher Publishing, are taking their free workshops across the region as part of Fresher’s mission to encourage creative writing, and to raise awareness of the newly launched Fresher Writing Prize.

Emma Scattergood, Editorial Director of Fresher Publishing and part-time Witch, said: “It is such a privilege to be invited into schools and see children developing confidence in their own creativity. The ideas they have for stories are fabulous, and we look forward to capturing some of them in the Fresher Prize Anthology.”

Aspiring writers of all ages are being encouraged to spend the Christmas holidays putting pen to paper so they can enter the competition, which includes a Writing Wizardry prize for children of nine years and under, who can win their own height in books.

Award-winning author Ali Sparkes will be judging the children’s 500-word stories and the best will be published in the Fresher Writing 2015 anthology, alongside the short-listed adult entries.
