A Bournemouth lap-dancing club has been granted a new sexual entertainment venue licence, despite claims it “exploited” customers.
Spearmint Rhino’s licence for its venue on Yelverton Road went before Bournemouth council’s licensing board on Tuesday night after the council received 15 objections to its application for a renewal.
Cllr David Smith, ward councillor for the town centre, produced three witnesses he claimed had been “exploited”.
Read our minute by minute coverage of the meeting as it happened
The first, Mrs A, told the board her brother had spent more than £6,000 at the venue in just one evening in 2011.
“He wears a hearing aid, has trouble with literacy and relies on the goodwill of others not to take advantage,” she told the meeting.
The man himself proceeded to tell the board that dancers on the night in question had “kept tempting” him and he had no idea he was mounting up such high costs.
“They were taking advantage of me and I didn’t know,” he claimed. “I was buying them lots of drinks and they took it in turns to dance with me. I didn’t have anything to drink – I have liver problems so never drink.”
Philip Kolvin QC, representing Spearmint Rhino, said the club “hotly contested” allegations of exploitation and that as the man had not wanted to reveal his identity, there was a “real problem” answering them.
Two other witnesses, also unnamed, told similar stories alleging high value transactions on their debit cards which they had not authorised.
Vice president of Spearmint Rhino UK John Specht said each transaction was watched by a CCTV camera and required a thumb print, signature and PIN number.
“The bank will call for evidence such as CCTV. We always fully co-operate,” added Mr Specht.
“Banks have made no findings against us.”
The board’s chair, Cllr Andrew Morgan, granted a six-month licence on a probationary period subject to conditions agreed with police.
He criticised the club for being “woeful” in losing some CCTV footage, adding: “If you do not get it right next time, you will not get the result you want.”

If Mrs A's brother has a problem then why doesn't somebody go with him to look after him. Nobody is forced or physically dragged into clubs like this, they go in on their own.
According to the story "Vice president of Spearmint Rhino UK John Specht said each transaction was watched by a CCTV camera and required a thumb print, signature and PIN number. " then you should KNOW what you are doing.
The banks and credit card companies must have approved the transactions as the club was never pulled up on it, the police have investigated the club and found no fault, so whose fault/problem is it?
I believe that it is possible to put a limit on the daily amount you can charge to a credit card and if you want to go over the limit the CC company will call you.

Totally agree, but your view won't be popular with the Holier Than Thou lot Bournemouth seems to have.
This is just an exercise in certain Councillors getting their name in the papers. Smith makes it sound like he is looking out for the welfare of constituents, but all he is doing is trying to garner votes next May. The Police, Council and banks all looked into these claims, and nothing was done. Still didn't stop Smith going on his witch hunt though.
Next week he will be having Macdonalds up because some fat muppet swears blind they forced him to eat the burgers and they made him fat.

Common sense prevailed. I am not a bog fan of this venue and would not choose to go there, but have made a few visits on stag nights, birthday etc.
The girls in there are trying to make as much money as possible, but doesn't every bar/club in the town. People who visit this type of place, must surely realise what they are visiting and what will happen inside. One simple rule - never take more money in than you can afford to loose - same rule I apply when visiting the casino next door.

I think the most shocking thing about this is the opening times of this place...until 6:00am! Blimey, who wants a lap dance over their cornflakes?

How interesting that you should know that.
I am sure that you have the proof and will be contacting the Echo, the council and eventually the police as well.
Alternatively you may be exercising your imagination a tad too far.

" The Police, Council and banks all looked into these claims, and nothing was done."
really
so the license being granted on a trial period is nothing being done ?
The fact that this clip joint wiped the cctv recordings should tell you all you need to know, and all the reason why it should have been shut down.

Money does talk and obviously there are a number of author at I've members of the club from those who have granted the licence.
Plus...where would the Councillors go for a late night drink ..?
As if it was ever in doubt.
Right and wrong rarely get a look in at these things.

If you don't like it don't go, stay at home, go on the internet where you can meet a nice girl called Dave, I mean Davina, who will tell you their sob story of how they found love in the UK but the man in question was a rat who was married and has left her helpless and stranded at Moscow airport, and if you will help her by paying her flight to the uk she will love you forever ;)

It is probably those envelopes which started the whole investigation off. The fact that is has probably found that you aren't dragged in such places at gunpoint at forced to hand over your life savings or student loan like some of the idiots complaining would suggest a good reason why the appeal failed and the licence was renewed.
And no, I am not a customer, owner or any relation to the place at all. Never set foot in there, never will. Frankly, after seeing the state of the women who work there, FYEO and Wiggle when they occasionally appear outside for a smoke or to try and promote the place, I can't see why anyone would pay to see them wearing little or nothing anyway!
I think Andrew Morgan did the right thing, give them 6 months and take another look.
If you do not want something in our town then do not use it just like the IMax. Just goes to show there are more "Dir.. Old Men" in Bournemouth than IMax customers.

There are more dirty old men in Bournemouth because places like Spearmint Rhino cater for them. Where you find dirt you find flies.

why is this news ? Last I looked we live in a country that encourages free trade, which in turn encourages the consumer to make their own choice as to where and how they choose to part with their hard earned (or not earned in some cases !) money.
As someone has already mentioned, if you don't like this type of establishment then dont use it. Personally I would rather stay at home than go there, but have no objection to consenting adults spending their money and time on what ever they chose to !
As to the guy who claims to have spent that much money in one night on his card, I wish I had that amount of cash I could splash !

The problem here is that a vulnerable member of society went into a club in all good faith and was then taken advantage of because he/she didn't understand. "The banks found no finding against us" oh really? and since when does anybody trust the banks nowadays! They put the entire nation into crisis! Vulnerable members of society should not be exploited in this way. Mr billd766 I have worked with special needs and with vulnerable people, each one is different many are able to go out and about on their own it doesn't mean we should live in a society that allows exploitation.

When you get paid does your money go into a bank? Do you trust them that your money is correct and that you have not been robbed by the bank?
If there was a problem then the credit card company should have been contacted as the evidently were and they seem to agree that the checks and balances were done correctly or esle they would ahve got the money back from Spearmint Rhino and refunded it.
The police have investigated the club and found no problems either.
So if the bank, the CC company and the police found no problems are you saying that you don't trust them either.
Did this person have a sign that said I am hearing impaired and vulnerable? How could his sister allow this, in your words "vulnerable man" go out on his own and spend his own money on his own credit card without knowing?
If he was that vulnerable why wasn't somebody else with him to take care of him. I can appreciate that he may have special needs but he is also entitled to live his own life his own way.
The guy went into the club of his own volition and spent his own money using his own credit card and each transaction was watched by a CCTV camera and required a thumb print, signature and PIN number.
He must have been aware of what he was doing and signing for. If he wasn't for any reason then he should not have gone in there in the first place nor should he have been using a CC with that amount of credit which is a very high limit anyway.
If he was vulnerable then somebody should have been with him to take care of him.

I'm not surprised that only so few objected. You'll probably find more erotica on TV, cinema and in computer games these days.

Lets hope they hang themselves in the end with this 6 month probation period. The girls can make as much as £1,000 a week. But I think you have to be desperate to pay for this type of thing as its all acting and fake. Bournemouth should comprehensively Ban any club like this and sex shops. And change the whole dynamics of Bournemouth.

Don't get me wrong, I am no holier than thou and I am all in favour of employment for people BUT when are we going to stop allowing the banks (they have a big part to play in this) and the big rich companies like this one to stop taking the mickey out of people who don't expect it and think they are going our for an evening. Lets have some good will and start looking after disabled people instead of dumping on them. If anyone has problems with literacy and numeracy and have special needs they should BE ALLOWED to go out without being RIPPED OFF. END OF.

So ban all the clubs in this town but leave them everywhere else...? Not the wisest comment. I bet you like the scantily clad girls on a night out who want all of the wrong attention that blokes like you give them ... And waste your money then on drinks, drugs and condoms for them but you don't then go into town the next weekend and have a go at any girl you see on a night out...
Moral .. Story.. Don't judge dancers. Not all are what society thinks of them. Customers do go in and some have realised that some girls are in fact, quite decent. Do you shun the waitresses who work there? Or even the doormen? What kind of person does that make you? I imagine there more u desirable people you work with or who you see in places such as gyms or shops that you're more friendly too but if you really knew how they were, you wouldn't bother. Anyone's sister could dance for a year. Stop judging.
Get over yourselves with this sad story.

Moral ..
