A BOURNEMOUTH singer performed in front of thousands of people after being selected by James Blunt to be his support act.

Drew Allen was hand-picked by James Blunt himself after the international superstar teamed up with the Daily Echo to find a local artist to perform ahead of his sell-out gig at the BIC yesterday evening.

The You’re Beautiful singer said the 24-year-old contemporary folk artist was the obvious choice.

Speaking ahead of yesterday’s gig, James said: “I was handed a shortlist of three artists by the paper and Drew stuck out immediately. There is something really different about his tone. He’s just fantastic.”

James teamed up with six newspapers across the country to find local artists to support him during his 18 month tour.

Now halfway through his tour, James said playing at Bournemouth was like a homecoming and he was pleased to be back in the UK.

He said: “I’m from Hampshire so my friends and family will be coming along. The BIC is a great venue and I like Bournemouth. I like being anywhere by the sea.”

Drew, who performs armed with a harmonica and guitar, said he was delighted to play in front of such a big crowd.

He said: “It’s incredible. I’m so grateful to James for picking me. It’s the largest gig I’ve ever played.”

His dad Phil, who manages Drew, said the family, who live in Moordown, were looking forward to the show.

He said: “It’s a huge stepping stone. We’re all really proud.”

Drew performed in front of more than 3,000 people at the BIC prior to James’ show last night.

Asked if he thought the youngster had what it takes to go all the way in the music business, James added: “If I can go far on one song I’m sure Drew can too.”
