BOURNEMOUTH has been named Best UK Coastal Resort at the British Travel Awards for the second year running.

The announcement was made at a ceremony in London last night where guests heard that more than a million votes had been cast by the public.

The resort had to see off tough competition to win Gold, with Tenby in Silver and Bude in Bronze position. Other nominees included Blackpool, Brighton, Newquay, Scarborough, St Ives, Weymouth and Whitby.

Councillor Lawrence Williams, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture said: “I am so pleased that Bournemouth has won again. The people of Bournemouth should be proud that our beautiful town has been recognised as the Best UK Coastal Resort. It is a great reflection on the appeal of our town to visitors, business and locals alike.”

Mark Smith, Head of Tourism, added: “We’re tremendously proud to win this award voted for by the public for the second year running. It’s a credit to the work of all the businesses in the town and the continued investment in building a top class destination.

“But we’re not resting on our laurels, we are determined to keep making Bournemouth even better with substantial improvements to the seafront rolling out next year.”

Bournemouth council is investing £4 million in phase one of improvements to the Pier Approach as part of a 20-year vision to develop a world-class seafront. Visitors to Pier Approach will enjoy water play features and landscaping improvements in keeping with the history and geology of the area. The works end in the spring.
