BOURNEMOUTH shoppers and visitors are being urged to make the most of free parking at selected council car parks in the run up to Christmas.

Starting this week, Bournemouth Borough Council is introducing free parking in certain car parks on Thursday evenings from 4pm and all day on Sundays.

It’s hoped the initiative, which is being introduced at car parks across the borough, will encourage shoppers to hit the high streets and provide a boost for local businesses.

Councillor Michael Filer, cabinet member for transport, cleansing and waste, said: “We thought this was a nice festive gesture to ease some of the pressure that you can feel in the mad rush just before Christmas.

“We hope it encourages people to get out and about without the worry of knowing where to park or the fear of possibly getting a parking ticket.”

The initiative applies to most council-operated car parks in the town centre, including the Richmond Gardens multi-storey, Richmond Hill, the Winter Gardens and Eden Glen.

It also applies to Braidley Road Bridge, West Hill, St Stephen’s Road and the car parks at the town hall, Outside of the town centre, shoppers can park for free on the designated days at Hawkwood Road and Palmerstone Road in Boscombe, Woodside Road in Southbourne, Milburn Road, Landseer Road and Alumhurst Road in Westbourne and Leslie Road and Cranmer Road in Winton.

Cllr Filer added: “There’s lots going on and we want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy it. The atmosphere around Christmas is just brilliant and we are sure shoppers and businesses will welcome the benefits.”
