HUNDREDS of people braved the winter weather to take part in the popular Boscombe 10k.

Young and old donned the wet weather gear and put their best foot forward for the annual running event, a firm favourite on the area’s sporting calendar.

Starting from King’s Park Athletics Stadium on Sunday morning, the event was organised by Bournemouth Joggers ladies running club.

Two fun run events for under-15s took place in the morning – a 1.5k and a 3k event around the stadium’s circuit.

For spectators and family members looking on, organisers ensured there were plenty of hot drinks to keep people warm with space to shelter from the weather inside and on the stands.

The 10k runners took on the multi-terrain course from Kings Park around Littledown and Queens Park, returning to race headquarters.

The event was raising money for the Bournemouth Hospital charity.

Race director Lauren Kibble said the wet weather had dampened a few spirits but she was delighted by the strong turnout in soggy conditions.

“The turnout has actually been brilliant all things considering.

“This is our 27th year and it just shows how popular it is.

“From children to adults- it’s got a great family feel to it.”

First over the line during the morning’s 1.5k was Liam Nixon, 10, in six minutes and nine seconds and Mia Elmore, 10, in six minutes and 15 seconds.

In the 3k event, Sean Hartnett, 11, crossed the finish line in 12 minutes and 50 seconds and Charlotte Cooke, 12, in 15 minutes and 40 seconds.

And in the 10k, David Broadley from Poole Athletics Club finished in 34 minutes and 35 seconds.

The first woman over the line was Lin Lascelles from Maiden Newton Runners, who finished in 38 minutes and 56 seconds.

In total, 534 runners started the event, with 530 finishers.

Susanne Howland, who was running the 10k with her friend, said: “This is my fourth or fifth 10k.

“I started off doing the Race for Life runs and just built it up from there.”

All participants also collected a prize at the end of the race.

All 650 spaces for the 10k event were taken earlier this month, Lauren confirmed.

She thanked main sponsors Message Direct, Running Memories and Sweatshop for their support.
