TWO people have been left with "very serious" injuries after the car they were in crashed into a lamppost this morning.

The emergency services have been called out to Canford Cliffs Road, Poole, close to Compton Acres.

The police, fire brigade and ambulance service were called at around 10.50am and the road was closed between Lilliput Road and Haven Road for almost five hours while the scene was examined and cleared.

Police said that the road was reopened at 3.38pm.

Police on the scene said that two casualties were in a "very serious condition".

Next of kin have now been informed.

Several police cars, two fire engines and the ambulance service were at the scene.

Sergeant Sarah Jones of Poole Traffic Unit, senior investigating officer in the case, said: “We received a call at 10.50am with reports of an RTC on Canford Cliffs Road, which involves a black sports car containing two male occupants.

“Both of the men have been taken to Poole General Hospital with serious injuries and their condition is still being assessed.

“The next of kin are aware.

“Investigations continue to ascertain the cause of the collision.

“Southern Electric are here due to the car hitting a lamp post, which led to some electrical wires being exposed.”

She said that the make of the vehicle was an MK sports car, registered to a man from Poole.

The men are thought to have sustained serious injuries, but no further details have yet been given.

Marlene Todd, who works as a chef at Compton Acres, said: "I was walking through the woods here at Compton Acres with a colleague, when we heard this loud bang and the sound of breaking glass at the same time.

"My colleague walked up, to have a look, and saw a car which had hit a lamppost, which had landed on the passenger side of the roof of the car.

"I hope that the people in the car are okay."
