You've got to hand it to them; several smash hits, one drummer change, one bassist swap and one decade later, The Kooks have still got it.

There is something still undeniably honest and endearing about their brand of self-described ‘unashamed pop’; a bunch of guys making music they like, because they can. But they’ve definitely evolved.

Bursting forth from the stage in a flare of rock-poppy sunshine, lead singer Luke Pritchard led jam-packed fans through an eclectic mix of quirky tracks, from beloved favourites ‘She moves in her own way’ and ‘Ooh La’ to more sophisticated, fresh tunes with their own brand of kookiness such as ‘Down’, namesake of The Kooks’ new album released in April this year.

For though they may have slipped under the mainstream radar for a time, it is clear The Kooks have not been idle. The chaps’ love of the The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Police, David Bowie and even hip hop, shine through their new tunes; each with its own unique character.

Not bad for a band that got together ‘on a whim really’ and bagged their first gig despite lack of a demo because the landlord liked their hats.

Only gripe? The length of the set - an hour and fifteen minutes of headliner for a £19.50 ticket could never be described as industry standard value for money, but then, one supposes it’s the rock star’s prerogative to leave ’em wanting more.
