MOTORISTS are being warned to expect delays when work starts on a £90,000 road resurfacing scheme at Poole’s Ashley Cross next week.

These roadworks, scheduled to last three days from Wednesday, are taking place on a worn out section of Bournemouth Road, between the Church Road traffic lights junction and Courtenay Road.

Borough of Poole says the work has been timed outside rush-hour, between 9.30am-4pm, in a bid to reduce traffic disruption. However, council transport boss Cllr Ian Potter said delays are unavoidable.

Poole’s transportation portfolio holder, explained: “As Bournemouth Road is such a busy road we have planned for the works to take place during half term, as there is generally 15 per cent less traffic on the roads during this period.

“We recognise that the works will cause some unavoidable disruption to road users and would ask motorists to allow extra time for their journeys.

“We would like to thank everyone for their patience, while these improvements are carried out.”

Minor work starts on Monday (Oct 27), but this will not affect traffic. Then on Wednesday and Thursday the traffic signals at Ashley Cross’ Church Road junction will be turned off. During this period all right turns at this junction will be temporarily restricted, and traffic will be unable to go straight ahead over the lights from Springfield Road to the one-way section of Church Road.

However, at the end of each of these two days the signal junction will be turned back on.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation on Bournemouth Road, 9.30am-4pm, Wednesday to Friday.

Borough of Poole insists local businesses will open as normal, with bus services and pedestrian access remaining unaffected.

Cllr Potter explained: “These works will complete £228,000 worth of major improvements which have been carried out in and around Bournemouth Road over the past year.”
