A 56-year-old man died after his scaffolding tower collapsed as he was trying to repoint his brickwork.

John Hayes, of Allens Road, Hamworthy, is believed to have fallen inside the tower after it came away from the wall of the two-storey flat block.

One of the wheels of the scaffolding tower was not secured properly and it was in a poor condition, PC Luke Davis told the inquest at Bournemouth Coroner’s Court.

The accident happened on July 3 and Mr Hayes died four days later in Southampton Hospital. A post-mortem revealed he suffered numerous fractures to his skull and died of severe brain injuries.

Sheriff Payne, senior coroner for Dorset, said Mr Hayes died as a result of a tragic accident.
