A SOLDIER who avoided prosecution after a frenzied attack on a central Bournemouth business has apologised.

Private Karl Adkins was revealed to be the man seen in shocking CCTV footage smashing a ladder 19 times into LetDirect’s premises at Old Christchurch Road on October 9.

The cost to replace the damaged window was £1,150 but despite police swiftly arresting Pte Adkins, he was not charged or given a caution.

In a letter to owner Ersan Turay, the 19-year-old soldier expressed his “sincere apologies” for the damage caused.

“It was not a targeted attack, it was from the actions of being stressed and drinking too much, which led to me being out of control which I deeply regret and now feel deep remorse for what I have done,” he said.

Bournemouth Echo: Apology letter written by Private Karl Adkins

“I understand this isn’t what you and the staff would want or have to see at the start of the working day, all due to my stupid actions.”

Police dealt with Pte Adkins by way of community resolution, which the force had claimed Mr Turay had agreed to and allowed the soldier to pay just £125 for the damage and face no further action.

This was disputed by Mr Turay and confusion appears to have arisen because another property rented out by the businessman on Windham Road had sustained £125 of criminal damage in a separate incident.

Dorset Police said Mr Turay had been “mistaken” and that the community resolution agreement was binding.

However, following the Daily Echo’s story yesterday detective superintendent Mark Cooper telephoned Mr Turay to say the case would be reviewed.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “Dorset Police has made contact with the victim of the crime and is currently reviewing this case. Should any service failures be identified, these will be remedied.”

Mr Turay said he was encouraged that police have agreed to look at the case again but will not be satisfied until he has been correctly compensated.
