A WEATHER warning for severe gales has been extended to Dorset as Britain is battered by the end of Hurricane Gonzalo.

The Met Office extended the yellow warning to Dorset from 10am this morning until 8pm this evening.

South West Trains is reporting delays of up to 40 minutes on services between Bournemouth and Southampton Central due to a fallen tree on the line at Sway.

Delays are expected until at least 1pm today.

Gusts of up to 70mph could hit exposed coastal areas and headlands.

A spokesperson said: “Gales, and more locally severe gales, are expected to affect much of the country on Tuesday, and this update extends the warning across southern counties.

“Gusts of 40-50, locally more than 50 mph are likely inland, with 60 to 70 mph gusts in some exposed coastal areas, locally higher on hills and headlands.

“The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel and possible damage to trees. This is a further update of the warning first issued on Saturday.”

The chief forecaster added: “A deep depression is affecting the UK with strong winds in its circulation, and there remains the potential for disruption to travel, especially as heavy showers run through, increasing the gust strength.

“Fallen leaves impeding drainage increases the risk of surface water affecting roads, while some damage to trees is possible, given that many are still in full leaf.”

The Environment Agency put out a flood warning in West Dorset for Preston and the Sea Life area of Lodmoor for two hours after high tide this morning at 6am.

Heathrow Airport has had to cancel some flights because of the gales and motorists are being urged to take care on the roads.

The AA warned that hazards like falling branches and trees could occur after the gales started to subside.
