A DARING granny has raised more than £1,800 for Montacute Special School after doing a 15,000ft skydive for her 70th birthday.

Rosie Wallis, who has been a governor at the Poole school for four years, completed the hair-raising challenge – which was a remarkable 70th birthday gift from her sons – at Honiton in Devon on Saturday, October 11.

Her tandem jump, which saw her freefalling two miles at speeds of 120mph, has already raised an impressive amount for the school where her grandson Ben, 10, has been a pupil for seven years – and money is still coming in.

Rosie, from Sturminster Newton, said that it was ‘an amazing experience’ and added that she hoped it would ‘make a big difference for these wonderful young people.’ The ‘Outstanding’ school for children with severe, profound or multiple learning difficulties is set to move out of its dilapidated setting into a brand-new building under construction in its Canford Heath grounds.

But the £5m government funding for the project fell short of actually equipping it – even with essential kit, such as hoists for some of the most severely disabled children.

As a consequence of this, the school launched Monty’s Appeal and it is working hard to raise a total of £500,000 before the new building is scheduled to open in September 2015.

Fundraiser Vicki Edwards said: “She has raised enough for either a new whiteboard, or something amazing for the outside space and play area.”
