A pedestrian has died after being involved in a collision with a car in Poole.

The 68-year-old man, who has not been named by police, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries following the accident, that happened close to the mini-roundabout at the top of Constitution Hill Road.

Yesterday Dorset Police confirmed the man had died of his injuries in Poole Hospital.

A police spokesman told the Daily Echo: “A pedestrian involved in a road traffic collision in Poole on Friday evening has died in hospital today.

“The deceased, a male from the Poole area was admitted to Poole General Hospital after being involved in a collision with a red Vauxhall Adam hatchback at the junction with Constitution Hill Road and Ashley Road, Poole, near to the Sea View Hotel.

“The collision occurred at around 9.30pm on Friday, from which the male sustained serious head injuries.”

No-one else was injured in the incident, although witnesses say a woman driver was treated for shock at the scene.

Dorset Police Chief Inspector Dean O’Connor said: “The road remained closed for several hours to allow officers from the traffic department, collision investigation and crime scene examiners to attend and examine the scene.”

Sea View pub landlord Tony Jones said he walked over to the incident while emergency services were tending to the man.

“The police were there for about three or four hours after it happened.

“I went over because someone thought he could have been one of the locals from the pub, but he wasn’t. I didn’t know who he was.”

The mini-roundabout complex, that has three pedestrian crossings, was recently revamped by Borough of Poole as part of the £12.1million Three Towns Travel project.

Borough of Poole leader Cllr Elaine Atkinson told the Daily Echo: “Everything is constantly under review and whenever there is a serious accident, as in this case, we work with the police and other agencies to work out what has happened and if the changed road layout contributed in any way.

“I’d say that the whole area is safer than it was because there’s a crossing there now, but I would like to reassure people we will be looking at all aspects of what has happened.”

Mr Jones said: “If you ask me the crossings are too close to the roundabout, this is something I’ve had experience of.

“You’re crossing the road and people come around the roundabout and, if they don’t know the area, it can be quite dangerous.”

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “There were some raised eyebrows locally about the traffic layout up here.

“It is easy to see why some drivers might get confused when they approach it, but as far as I know there hasn’t been any serious accident, until last night, since it was all finished.”

Witnesses should contact Dorset Police’s PC 1027 Andrew Fields on 101 quoting incident number 17:494.
