PLANS to transform one of the county’s best-loved historical buildings into homes are set to go before East Dorset District Councillors today.

The green light would see the conversion of Stapehill Abbey which closed as a visitor attraction four years ago, to 19 dwellings.

The building which forms the main complex will be developed, while a two-storey section will be demolished, as well as the single-storey elements.

The former museum building will also be torn down, with 25 homes to be built at that site.

Councillors on Ferndown Town Council’s planning committee have already backed the proposals.

East Dorset planners have said the complex is in a ‘poor state of repair’, with extensive work and funding required to secure its future by the applicant, Intelligent Land.

They recommend that councillors approve the scheme.

It is believed the property sold for over £3m.

The committee meeting is today at 9.30am at the Furzehill offices.
