A SPECIAL event being held in Poole’s historic Scaplen’s Court will transport visitors back to the 17th century.

The 15th century building close to the quay, then the George Inn, was occupied by Parliamentarian troops during the English Civil War and their graffiti of initials and dates can still be seen carved into the old stone fireplaces.

Today personalities from Poole’s Civil War past will be back in the atmospheric building, opposite Poole Museum.

Scaplen’s Court has been a merchant’s house, a travellers’ inn, furniture workshop, Victorian slum, and now a museum and education centre.

Cllr Xena Dion, cabinet portfolio holder for community, culture and learning, Borough of Poole, said: “This free event throws light on an important period of Poole’s history and is a great opportunity to find out more about everyday life in the 17th century.”

The Civil War Day is an event to celebrate Poole Museum’s latest exhibition on the Swash Channel Wreck.

This armed merchant ship, which went down outside the entrance to the harbour in 1630, has been the subject of the largest underwater excavation since the Mary Rose.

Today’s event runs from 11am to 3pm and entry is free.
