THE most beautiful villages in the county have been honoured.

Awards were given out as part of the 2014 Dorset Best Village Competition this week, with three special presentations made on the night.

The People’s Project – the village judged to have the best initiatives involving local people – was given to Charmouth for its Shoreline community magazine.

Milborne St Andrew’s Bus 2 Go transport project and Briantspuddle’s community coffee shop were highly commended.

In the Best Environment category, Alderholt’s village pond came out on top, with the ‘community wood’ at Shipton Gorge a close runner up.

A new category also highlighted the Best Village Shop, resulting in the team at Winfrith Newburgh Village Stores and Post Office taking home the award.

Iwerne Minster Village Shop and Post Office was hard on its heels.

Martinstown, near Dorchester, picked up the prize for Best Large Village, while Loders, near Bridport scooped the award for Best Small Village.

The awards have been organised by Dorset Community Action since 1987.
