DORSET’S only male barbershop singing group is on the lookout for new members.

In a bid to attract new recruits – both young and old – the Southern Union Chorus is holding its annual taster evening on Monday, September 29.

The Learn to Sing evening, which will be held at Linwood School on Alma Road in Bournemouth, will give potential new members the chance to listen to the choir perform in its unique unaccompanied four-part harmony singing style and have a go at joining in.

Chorus member John Walker said: “I joined the chorus after attending a Learn to Sing open evening – and I had not sung since being a treble.

“Joining in with the chorus was a bit daunting but I soon overcame my lack of confidence,” he added.

The chorus, which is a registered charity and raises thousands of pounds for good causes each year, cover a variety of songs ranging from ballads, rock and pop songs, Christmas carols and songs from musicals.

During the open evening, experienced singers from the group will be on hand to welcome and help potential new members.

The Chorus rehearses every Monday evening and regularly performs for clubs, societies, social groups, fetes and celebrations. It also produces a Christmas show and competes in local and national contests.
