Mudeford lifeboat was launched after reports of a swimmer in difficulty in waters off Southbourne.
The lifeboat and Southbourne Coastguard Rescue Officers were called and motor yacht Annie Mack also responded to the broadcast by Portland Coastguard on Tuesday evening around 6.20pm.
A member of a local swimming club had also swum out to the scene to help the man.
The swimmer in difficulty had been drifting but he was able to make his own way to shore.
All units were stood down.
