PLAYERS from AFC Bournemouth, Dorset’s Police and Crime Commissioner and even the news team of Daily Echo have taken part in the latest charity challenge to sweep the internet.

Known simply as the Ice Bucket Challenge, participants just need a bucket of icy water and a smart phone to take part in the fundraiser to promote awareness of motor neurone disease (MND), or ALS as it is known in the US.

Those nominated have to pour the bucket over the heads, or have some friends on hand to do the honour for them, before naming somebody else to take part, who then has 24-hours notice to carry out the challenge themselves.

Anyone who does not complete the task within the allotted time has to make a donation to charity, with the majority of donations going to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Dorset PCC, Martyn Underhill, took on the Ice Bucket Challenge this afternoon at Dorset Police’s Headquarters in Winfrith, with the help of Chief Constable, Debbie Simpson, and Deputy Chief Constable, James Vaughan, after receiving five nominations to take part.

He said: “It is a fantastic initiative for a great charity, which I am pleased to support. It is an incredible fundraising idea that is raising millions for charities across the world."

AFC Bournemouth stars such as goal keeper, Lee Camp, and defender, Steve Cook, are just a couple of the team who have taken part, as well as staff from Sainsbury’s in Boscombe and staff from The Cumberland Hotel on East Overcliff Drive.

Here in our newsroom, the photographers, reporters and even the deputy editor, Andy Martin, have done their bit for charity.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a rare condition where parts of the nervous system become damaged, causing progressive weakness in the body, which usually affects the muscles.

It means that those affected can often have trouble with walking, speaking, swallowing and breathing.
