ORGANISERS of the annual Verwood Rustic Fayre, were determined to put a brave face on what was the wettest day in the show’s 21- year history.
Volunteer helper Marion Strugnell said: “Every year it gets bigger and better. We have never had a washout before. It is a shame because there is a lot of effort involved.”
Musician John Hensel, a member of the Riverside Jazzers, said: “Our gazebo started leaking so we had to seek refuge in the beer tent.”
Verwood Rotary Club chairman, Vern Harris, said: “This is by the far the worst day by a long, long way, so I guess in 21 years we can’t complain too much.
“Last year was our best show ever – we raised around £18,000 for local charities. We usually have around 4,000 to 5,000 people turn up, but this year we will be lucky if we get 400.”
He added: “It’s a shame because it is one of the biggest fundraisers for the rotary club but I would like to thank everyone who has turned up in spite of the weather and who helped to make this event possible.”
Highlights of the show included a vulture and falconry display, a gun dogs show, a classic car exhibition and music by the Verwood Town Band.
Colin White, one of the classic car exhibitors, said: “We have been supporting this show for around 12 years. I think it is important to show up even if the weather isn’t great.”
