Heavy rain and strong winds put a dampener on the last day of the Bank Holiday weekend with many people preferring to stay at home.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning and in some parts of the county there was more than 30mm of rain.

In Bournemouth the beach by the pier was mostly deserted, except for a few dedicated surfers taking to the waters beneath a foreboding sky.

There were also long delays on A31 and A338 due to heavy traffic leaving the county.

Standing water and driving rain made conditions worse as well.

But the weather didn't bother six-year-old Isaac Guppy or his little sister Eliza, three, who made their own entertainment jumping in the puddles.

Their mother Kara said. “They love playing in the rain. They say there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing.”

Bournemouth Echo:

Holidaymaker Alison Williams had been up at 6am to travel to Bournemouth from Worcester with her son Ryan and daughter Sian.

She said: “We are here to see the air festival next weekend so we are hoping the weather improves. We are determined to go to the beach tomorrow no matter what!”

Dave and Jayne Sharman who had travelled from Stratford on Avon with their dog Molly, were determined to make the best of it too.

Dave said: “Bournemouth is our second home. We love it. Jayne is going shopping and I'm just going to go and have a beer.”

Tom Rendell who works at the Garden Deli in the lower gardens said: “The weekend was quite busy but not surprisingly it has been pretty quiet today - people still seem happy though - at least they've got a day off work.”

Jon Weaver, Bournemouth Tourism, air festival director said: “One wet Bank Holiday Monday is better than we could have expected - we've really had an incredible run of fantastic weather this summer.

"The calendar of entertainment, events and music has been great for the resort. We're really excited about the Air Festival this week and there's still a host of events still to come this year - including Arts by the Sea at the end of September”.
