THE A31 has been re-opened after a large oil spill closed the road between Lake Gates and Roundhouse roundabout.

The road was closed for nearly three hours from around 10.15am until just after 1pm.

Dorset Police said the spill covered about 20m of both sides of the single carriageway road and originates from a broken down Mercedes Sprinter van, registered to a man from Hereford, near the Roundhouse roundabout.

There was congestion in the area due to the road closure.

The Highways Agency attended the scene to carryy out a clean-up operation.
