THE first in a series of BSO concerts at Pier Approach will take place this afternoon.

The acclaimed Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will hold a mini BSO concert at 3pm today on the site once occupied by the Imax building.

The prelude to the two full symphonic concerts on Saturday, also include a BSO Strings concert on Friday at 3.30pm.

Today's concert from the Mini BSO quintet will see all four families of musical instruments found in the BSO perform.

The ensemble is designed to introduce children and youngsters to classical music in a fun way.

On Friday, the BSO Strings concert will include a variety of works from Holst's St Paul's Suite as well as pieces from Rossini and Puccini, Mozart and Grieg.

Saturday's full symphonic concerts for ticket-holders only will begin at 5pm and 7.45pm.

Both concerts are performed by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Maxime Tortelier.

The epic movie themed concert programme will include favourites from Superman, Jaws, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park and many more by composer John Williams.

And on Sunday, an alfresco tea dance will be held at 3pm.

The events today, Friday and Sunday are free with no tickets required.
