A FORMER Radio 1 DJ has admitted a string of sex offences against young boys.

Chris Denning - who previously lived in Poole - pleaded guilty to 29 charges involving boys as young as nine when he appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London.

But he denied a further 12 charges and will face a trial on November 24 at the court.

The offences he admitted were committed between 1967 and 1984 and involved boys aged from nine to 16.

Denning, 73, now of Basildon in Essex, formerly lived in Grebe Close, Creekmoor, and opened a games arcade called Zippiprint in Parkstone in 1981.

He was one of the original Radio 1 line-up when the station was launched in 1967, along with Kenny Everett, John Peel and Jimmy Savile.

After leaving the station, he worked as a music producer with the Beatles and helped launch the careers of the Bay City Rollers and Gary Glitter.

He was also the first announcer heard on BBC2 when the television channel first aired in 1964.

Denning was charged as part of Operation Yewtree, set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal, after his arrest in June last year.

The offences admitted in court are not believed to be directly linked to Savile, but comes under the umbrella of Yewtree because allegations were made as a direct result of the Savile inquiry.
