Council go to court to secure eviction order for traveller camp at Turlin Moor

Travellers at Turlin Moor

First published in News by

COUNCIL officers are set to go to court tomorrow morning to secure an eviction order against the large traveller encampment at Turlin Moor, Hamworthy.

Twenty five caravans and motor homes, with associated vehicles, are currently camped on the recreation ground.

Borough of Poole has provided a skip for the travellers to dump their rubbish, but admits the condition of the site is “deteriorating.”

The first caravans pulled onto the popular public open space last week.

Meanwhile, another group of travellers remain at The Old Camping Field, north of Napier Road, after arriving on Sunday.

However, this land is privately leased, so it is the tenant who is responsible for taking court action, not Borough of Poole. Seven caravans are at this site.

On the Turlin Moor site, a Borough of Poole spokesman confirmed: “There are 25 caravans/motor homes on site. The condition of the site is deteriorating. We have served direction orders. If the travellers fail to move we will go to court Wednesday morning.”

Comments have been opened on this story but please note: any reference to gypsies or any racially offensive term will cause them to be closed and you may find your account suspended. Romany Gypsies and Irish Travellers are legally recognised as ethnic groups, and protected by the Race Relations Act. Please keep your comments to this particular incident and do not generalise. Thanks for your co-operation.

Our BFA football team have a friendly match booked in on the pitch there this weekend. We would have been paying (THAT'S RIGHT, PAYING) for the use of the pitch for the 90 minutes. Even if the pitch is clear of vehicles it will probably be unfit to play- i imagine all manner of tyre marks, rubbish, glass and excrement will be left. UTTERLY SELFISH ACTIONS NO OTHER WORDS FOR IT

Unless people stand together and demand a change in the law to have their ethnic rights remove this will continue to get worse with every passing year. Someone started a government petition for this in March this year, in 5 months it has received only 105 signatures. That is hardly going to show the government how disgruntled the people of Poole are over this vast waste of taxpayers money is it. Sign the petition and share it with as many people as possible and you might actually achieve something. You certainly have nothing to lose by doing so.

Perhaps play your game and then refuse to pay the council. When they press you for the money, refer them to the Equalities Commission.

And any MP who voted to remove their ethnic status, IF it ever got 100,000 signatures and was debated and voted on, would be accused of racism. No chance of any of them doing that.

The reason why the travelers got ethnic rights in the first place was because of a ruling some insane judge made in the UK courts. The Irish travelers do not have the same ethnic status in their own country, so I really fail to see why you are playing a racism card here. I assure you now that if this could get before parliament before the general election the majority of MP's would vote in favour of the change, simply because they want your vote.

The majority of MPs don't have this problem in their constituency so couldn't care less about the votes in areas that do and are very careful what they say in public. Besides which many people vote for the same party at every election regardless of their policies.

I wonder if someone could help. After last night, in Poole, witnessing some obvious anti social behaviour from individuals that are currently resident on Turlin Moor. and balancing that with the comments about Mr Donoghue and his fraudulent building business. What is the exact definition of a 'traveller' but more importantly, how does Poole Borough Council actually and specifically determine that these individuals are encompassed by the said Race Relations Act and therefore spend taxpayers money in providing facilities that most of us have to pay for?
