A PACKAGING company in Poole is to close with the loss of 120 jobs.

The future of Crown Closures in Lake Road has been in jeopardy for months – but it has now been confirmed that the operation is to be shut down completely.

The Echo understands that the factory, which produces bottle tops and packaging materials, will be wound down between now and June, with redundancies being made each month as production is moved elsewhere in Europe.

Councillor Xena Dion, cabinet portfolio holder for the economy, Borough of Poole, said: “We are disappointed to hear that approximately 120 members of staff will lose their jobs at Crown Closures. We understand this is due to a reorganisation within Crown following a review of their European Operations.

“We, along with other agencies such as Dorset Growth Hub and Job Centre Plus, are already working with Crown Closures to help all of those that may be affected.”

The source close to the factory who asked not to be named said: “They are going to try to keep the factory open until then.

“Staff are going to go each month until they run it down to just a handful.

“They don’t know when they are going to go – it could be next week and they wouldn’t know. They have been told some will go each month depending on what lines are running, and which ones have gone to other countries.

“A lot of them have been there for years since they were apprentices.

“I dread to think how they’re feeling – especially the young men with young families to support. I feel very sorry for them.”

She said she believed production lines had been dismantled in their entirety and moved to Poland and Germany where labour was cheaper.

The factory, formerly known as Carnaud Metal Box, has operated from the site since the war. It was bought out by US-based Crown Holdings Inc in 1996. Rumours about its closure have abounded for years.

Earlier this summer the company confirmed that it had entered a consultation process.

A spokesman said at the time: “To protect the future of Crown’s wider business and its employees, as well as to ensure we remain competitive in the market, we need to consider options for restructuring.”

They added on Tuesday afternoon: "Following a thorough consultation with Trade Union representatives, the site will close next year at a date yet to be confirmed.

"We will continue to support the 102 employees affected as well as offer them the best advice and support to secure alternative employment."

How strange that work such as this factory provides is being sent to Poland because labour is cheaper - yet half of Poland's population now lives and works in UK taking jobs that perhaps should be going to UK nationals first and foremost ........

Agree to a point but ironically the only man my husbands place of work could get to do a decent job is polish. Not for less money but because hes a skilled worker which we dont have now in this country, they are struggling to find any younger men who have served an apprenticeship theses days we need to start training our youngsters again.
I feel for all the workers at crown its been the heart of the community for as long as i remember, I hope all the people manage to get jobs.

I have to say most if not all of the Polish workers I have come across have excellent work ethics & are not shy of hard work as some UK workers & benefit claimants are.
But, all too a familiar story I'm afraid to say.
We have some world leading businesses that make excellent profits from what they produce here in the UK with a well supported & a suitably skilled & qualified workforce.
But I feel for the remainder who make insufficient profit from severe competition so yes, they need to reduce the cost to manufacture products.
I couldn't see many UK suppliers making garments being sold through the Primark chain which in my book has to be considered a national disgrace with appalling conditions & wages paid to those who manufacture them in far eastern sweatshops.
Maybe we should be more supportive of UK producers with a "FAIR PRICE UK" similar to support that was offered to Coffee & Banana growers.
UK work opportunities are dwindling at an alarming level & I find it difficult to understand statistics published on UK unemployment, let alone those on our supposed economic recovery.
Xena Dion & the agencies quoted are probably sympathetic to those who face redundancy but this is just lip service - I have been made redundant whilst bringing up a young family, had precious little help such that they are declaring with some kind of divine inspiration & it was very difficult to make ends meet.
My message to those affected is believe in yourselves & stay positive with a flexible outlook - I feel for you all.

The company was taken over by an American firm (when I was working nights there for an agency in the 90s), was previously French owned, so why the rant about the EU? The cruel fact of life is that we all chase the cheapest price for a product, including I suspect Cromwell9, and this is where it all leads. Who consciously goes out to buy British these days? In the USA they have been up in arms about jobs being exported to China for years, so not an exclusive EU problem. What is sad is that this was one of the handful of remaining firms in Poole that are not "service" or retail based, and it is another nail in the coffin for jobs for a lot of Poole's population. How long is it before Chinese owned Sunseeker decide to move it's production to somewhere where the labour is cheaper?

I love the way the UKIP trolls keep on trying to skew this decision to be anti-EU. They are moving the production to Germany and Poland both of whom last time I looked were in the EU !!

Germany is not exactly famed for its cheap labour costs and from personal experience its labour laws are very restrictive. Poland is not longer that cheap either. So the US parent may well have had good industrial/technical reasons why best to shift production.

At the end of the day, whether we are in the EU or not, if a US firm wants to shift production and jobs from the UK to a lower labour cost country such as China there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.

The only way to "beat" this effect of globalisation is to develop a workforce that is very highly skilled to stay one step ahead of the game. Countries such as Sweden have realised this - they know they cannot "bash metal" as cheaply as others, but they aim to have the high skill high pay R&D departments etc located in Sweden.

The message therefore to British youngsters really is - get qualified! Because if you don't there are millions of people round the world that are prepared to work harder, longer and for less to do low skilled work.....and there is nothing that can be done about that.

Actually, you'll find the Poles in this country are mostly doing jobs that our native sofa slugs think are beneath them, partly due to the fact that the state pays so much for having kids that it's barely worth getting a job versus knocking out a couple of sprogs. Not only do a lot of foreign nationals come over here and work at minimum wage doing jobs that locals consider underpaid and not worth the effort, but they usually have enough spare to send some home too. I guess it's because they actually have a work ethic and don't think everything should be handed to them on a plate!

Oh dear cromwell9, you really have no idea about economics do you. This is nothing to do with Labour, LibDems or the EU. This is how capitalism works. It searches for the cheapest labour available, so that business owners and shareholders can receive higher profits. These people see no moral imperative that holds a British person's labour to be intrinsically more valuable than a Pole's or a Chinese person's labour. What we really need are stronger governing institutions, both at a national and European level, to legislate for workers, and not the current system that can only make the rich richer.

I wholeheartedly agree with your criticism of cromwell9's UKIP post. His conclusions were complete nonsense.

But more legislation for workers will just drive more jobs away to foreign shores where legislation is weaker. For example, in Germany they have no national minimum wage.

At the end of the day, jobs go abroad because of the UK consumer's demand for cheaper products.

There was never a problem getting people to do those jobs before we had an invasion of foreign workers. Hell, I've done a few min wage jobs in my time to scrape a living.
Perhaps Brits are now less inclined to go for these types of low paid jobs you describe due to being exploited to hell by employers who thanks to the influx of East Europeans can now treat their workforce like complete crap and get away with it. Zero hour contracts anyone?

Also worth remembering that every pound is probably worth about three times as much 'back home' for these people, so a low paid job in the UK is a very good earner at current exchange rates.

So let's get this straight....

People on here are complaining about Poles coming over here and taking our jobs.....and are also complaining about Poles staying in Poland and taking our jobs!!!

Could not make it up!!! Perhaps we should adopt the German solution to these pesky Poles!

Totally agree with you on that one, if / when I employ I would look at a pole all day long, they are simply better than the English, more skilled, more work conscience, less greedy and dedicated the core . We need foreign workers here now to prop up the massive English numbers on benefits,

Germany has a NMW €8.50.
Also Germany invested in young people.
Also in Germany the Unions have more power than in UK.
As for the article I feel sorry for ALL workers. In this monetary system is not about English vs Poles or any other nationality, but worker vs big fat cats.

Its hard to imagine anything more stupid than this. So you want to trade with China where labour is even cheaper than Poland? Ha ha! What do you think will happen? Have you not noticed how everything we used to make is now made in China? Educated? Well perhaps you could have learned how to spell then...And if anyone gainsays you they are a "traiter" (whatever that is). That's the hallmark of fascism. And the Poles aren't taking "your" jobs. They just turn up for work, that's all. Oh and who saved Britain during the war? It wasthe Poles! Read up on the Battle of Britain if you don't believe me- see how any planes Polish fighter pilots shot down compared with their British counterparts. Oh, and Labour aren't destroying anything- they're not even in power. Now back to jobs. Is it a Polish management relocating production abroad? Or some other "nasty" EU company? Or even a UK group? No, Crown is a US based company- that's right, Americans! An American decision! So it wouldn't matter if we were in the EU or not, the Americans don't care, they'll just work where its cheaper, or maybe they're worried that we'll come out of the EU and they need the plant to have access to EU markets... But don't let silly old facts get in the way of a good ukip rant, eh?

They just turn up for work, that's all. Oh and who saved Britain during the war? It wasthe Poles! What you dont know is that in August 2013 the company bought over the Polish workers, introduced them to our British workers .who taught them what to do ,.on the shop floor ,after management told them two.
The rest is history.Nice one,.

And I assume, when you criticise the "well educated" you are including the "plain speaking" private school educated Mr Farage, whose man-of-the-people schtick is the biggest political spin going today.

I am a Pole and I "love" reading your comments about how bad Polish people are in taking Your jobs! First look at your own benefits people. I work for a training provider and I teach your English people spelling, reading and writing! Half of you cannot express yourself in your own language without making a mistake! My best learners are foreign learners (not Poles only). Do you know why? Because we are hard working, reliable people who show commitment and responsibility in whatever we are doing. Even if we are paid a minimal wage. I am proud of myself because, out of all work colleagues, I have the best results in my field in the whole country. I would like to mention that I only work with native people. And article did not only mentioned Poles but Germany as well and yet all you did was to complain about Poles! Thank you for those who stands for Poles, and next time just be careful who you post as we are intelligent people, we can read and write English while 99.9% of you cannot do it in any other language!

Point well and truly avoided there - Mr Farage would be proud of you.

And why do you think "ther" system stacked against Ukip? You have a public-school city trader for a leader and are financed by tax-avoiding businessmen such as Paul Sykes and Demetri Marchessini. Ukip are as much a part of the system as the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

The current system is in crisis. People no longer trust politicians and, if you think Ukip and Mr Farage are an exception to that then your judgement is as poor as your spelling.

You would never know it going by the standard of your spelling, punctuation and grammar.
It was wrote in plain English. Not the grammar confusing rubbish for the well educated.
It is people like me who is going to sort the Uk mess out .So whatch out.
I'm less worried about Ukip's chances now. If cromwell9 is typical of their support then their voters will struggle to spell the X required to cast their vote.

There isn't a special, "grammar confusing rubbish" English for the well educated. There is one. You have failed to learn it and use it, just as you have failed to learn about the world beyond your Daily Express.

Germany has a minimum wage set at £6.80...Get your facts right....

I don't see how Labour comes into this. Remember who took us into the shambles then known as The Common Market, Edward Heath, now wasn't he a Tory and no friend of working people by definition? Strangely enough despite the betrayals of working people by Tony Blair, the Prime Minister who did most of the damage by advancing European integration was Margaret Thatcher, gone, but her legacy lives on! Just a few facts. The core of the problem is that all parties (including UKIP) are elite people on elite salaries who don't really know what it is like to have a working class wage, and to feel insecure. That is how most working people live their lives; overcome it by leaving the EU (if we must have a referendum then 18th June 2015 is the ideal date, 200 years after Wellington beat Napoleon) another thing we could usefully do is to make attendance at a public school or Oxbridge a disqualification for standing for election to Parliament. Let's have a government of working people and NOT elitist parasites.
