A DORSET choir has commemorated the First World War with a sold-out fundraising concert in aid of Help For Heroes.
The concert, which was attended by the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Denise Jones, saw classical vocal ensemble La Nova Singers perform music from 100 years ago while dressed in Edwardian costume.
The audience was served a vintage-style cream tea courtesy of The Kings Arms hotel, in the restored pavilion on Christchurch bowling green.
As well as listening to the classically-trained voices of the 14 singers, guests were invited to join in with Last Night of the Proms favourites like Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory.
The Mayor told the singers she appreciated the accuracy of their costumes, as she used to be a historian.
Conductor Michelle Nova said: “The whole afternoon was wonderful. We had a fantastic audience and when I turned around to join the singers in Rule Britannia, it was a wonderful sight to see the whole room filled with people waving flags.”
La Nova Singers are an all-female choir who perform regularly across the South and have been featured on BBC Radio 3.
The concert was part of a host of events taking place across the country as part of the First World War Centenary Programme led by the Imperial War Museums.
