HUNDREDS of people flocked to Saxon Square in Christchurch on Saturday to celebrate the shopping centre’s multimillion pound makeover.

Christchurch and District Band, the Funky Little Choir Co and Sessions Music and Heritage Club provided live entertainment for the crowds while young and old alike enjoyed the games and activities on offer.

Bryan Taylor, centre manager at Saxon Square, branded the event a huge success.

He said: “It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves at the new look Saxon Square. The regeneration works have made the centre a perfect place for community events and we look forward to hosting more in the future.”

He added: “I would like to thank everyone who supported our official relaunch including the shoppers, the mayor of Christchurch, our local councillors and the talented members of the community for providing the entertainment.

“I would also thank everyone who works across our 28 stores for their support on Saturday and throughout the regeneration project.”

Charlie Rose from the newly-formed Sessions Music and Heritage Group said: “Our young members had a brilliant time playing at the official re-launch of Saxon Square Shopping Centre.

“There was a really fun and friendly atmosphere throughout the whole day and it was a wonderful opportunity for them to perform in public.”

Cllr Ray Nottage, leader of Christchurch Borough Council, told the Daily Echo: “The re-launch day gave everyone a chance to see how the refurbishment has made the Square more open and welcoming to visitors and businesses alike. We are aiming to build on these improvements when we review developments across the whole of the town centre in the near future when everyone will get a chance to contribute to the plans.”
