Boscombe’s first summer carnival in recent years to bring ‘community closer together’

The big parade

The big parade

After a brief postponement the Pokesdown and Boscombe Carnival will take place on Sunday, August 10.

The event, which will include a parade starting at Pokesdown Railway Station at 2pm and finishing in the precinct, was delayed by three weeks as organisers sought funding for road signs, but thanks to the Coastal BID it can now go ahead.

As part of the build-up to the event, the first summer carnival in Boscombe for many years, there will be a series of free dance and art workshops for youngsters in the Sovereign Shopping Centre, running from August 5 to 9.

Boscombe Christmas Carnival veteran Cindy Jermon is organising the event alongside the area’s neighbourhood warden Amanda Catlin.

She said: “Unfortunately we couldn’t get the funding for the signs at first, but in the end the BID stepped forwards.

“It is great as now we have them we can use them for future events.”

The organisers hope the carnival – also sponsored by the Community Development Foundation and Sainsbury’s – will provide a boost to local businesses and encourage summer visitors to the town into the Boscombe area, while bringing the local community closer together.

The event, which will run from 10am to 5pm, will include a market at Pokesdown Green, fancy dress competition, a dog show in the precinct, street entertainment and music from charity Vita Nova.

As with the Christmas Carnival, which will go ahead this December, all proceeds from the event will go to pets charity PDSA.

For information on being involved in the parade or booking into the workshops, call Amanda Catlin on 07979593899 or 01202 395512.

There are some normal people in Boscombe you miserable so and so's can't you let any story however innocent be just that and let those of us who are desperate to see the area turned around just get on with it. I really am getting a tad bored of the constant Boscombe bashing by some commenters, yes we have far too many druggies and drunks but take a proper look around there are decent hard working families too, keep on talking the area down and all you do is perpetuate the poor perception of the area.

It's a great event for the pele of Boscombe and other areas if they wish to come.
There are some great people in Boscombe whose lives have been blighted by the drug users and dealers and by people who make ill informed comments in the comments page of the local newspaper.
This is good for Boscombe, come along and enjoy it.

The people who come on here to spread negativity over a positive story are no better than the drug dealers themselves.

The carnival will be an opportunity for the vast majority of the community who are positive and good people to show what Boscombe is really about.

An interesting comment. We all know the negative side of Boscombe, so may be you (and some others who seem to think the place shouldn't be slated) could let us know what is good about it? Please don't talk about the Pier or Seafront. That has nothing to do with Boscombe except it runs along the bottom of it.

For those of us old enough to remember when the carnival started by the football stadium & went along Christchurch Rd.,down Sea Rd.& along the seafront to Bournemouth I am sure we wish the organisers & the carnival every success for this year &following years.I remember when the Mayor took the salute on a balcony in the Excelsior building.Let's hope this can grow & two fingers to the moaners who leap into print when they can put down the efforts made by organisers who have Boscombe's welfare in mind.
