BOURNEMOUTH erupted in an explosion of colour and glamour on Saturday for the town’s 10th annual Bourne Free parade.

Led by Eurovision legends Bucks Fizz in a dazzling pink car, the gay pride celebration kicked off in style on East Overcliff Drive at 11am, before weaving its way through the town centre.

People flocked to cheer on those marching and lined the roads waving banners and taking photographs as a plethora of eye-catching sights were displayed.

These included a lorry packed with dancers energetically gyrating to Lady Gaga hits and other dance favourites, a lavishly decorated Wilts and Dorset bus, a float full of ‘nuns’ and others holding placards adorned with the words ‘thank God for lesbians’.

Event chairman Peter Lovegrove said he was delighted with how things had gone and was particularly excited to see Cheryl Baker and the rest of the Bucks Fizz gang join in with the fun.

“We’re in double digits now and have put on so much more this year,” he added. “It’s been fantastic. We have had a great reaction from people. This is not just about the gay community; it is about celebrating all diversity.”

Watching as dozens of people clutching a gigantic rainbow flag carefully negotiated their way through the route, spectator Karl Harman said he was enjoying the day.

He added: “It’s been even better than last year. I think for the 10th anniversary they had to do something extra special.”

The night before the parade a ‘Village People’ flash mob descended on Bournemouth Square. Events planned for the weekend included singing and dancing at the bandstand in Lower Gardens and a special church service in the Triangle on Sunday.

This is a perfectly innocent question but do some people in the gay community think that those who choose to parade around in a thong are degrading themselves and stereotyping peoples opinion of them in the same way as those in the hetrosexual community do when seeing scantily clad women?

I suppose if there was equal opportunities for all then there wouldn't really be a need for events like Bourne Free etc.

I'm not being argumentative btw it was just a thought.

Given the amount of money they raise for charity and the community it can't be a bad thing can it?

"These people" are ordinary human beings who care and look after their loved ones just like everyone else. And if there is such a thing as a god I'm sure he/she will not be concered about devout we have been to a book, but rather how we treat and care for other people different from us, an area you clearly need to addess before you meet your maker.

Only a matter of time. These events started as gay pride, then became lesbian & gay pride, then lesbian, gay & bisexual pride(LGB) , and now lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender (LGBT) pride so I imagine its only a matter of time before it becomes a fully inclusive lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender & straight (LGBTS) pride.
.
I think we should all take pride in the fact that we live in a country where we enjoy the freedoms where events like Pride can take place.

There is this paragraph that I read recently that explains why there is a Gay Pride Festival:

'Gay Pride was not born of a need to celebrate being gay.....but the right to exist without persecution....so instead of wondering why there isn't a Straight Pride movement....be thankful you don't need one'

I for one totally agree.
