Retailers urged to sign up to Carbon Quids scheme and reward shoppers for being green - allow comments

Bournemouth Echo: Cllr Michael Filer Cllr Michael Filer

INDEPENDENT retailers are being asked to provide offers to locals who agree to forsake the car for sustainable transport.

The Carbon Quids scheme, which is being introduced in Bournemouth this summer, sees members rewarded for going green.

Those who sign up to the scheme earn Carbon Quids every time they walk, cycle, car-share or use public trans-port.

Retailers are being asked to provide a special offer or discount which will attract people to their shop or business.

Their businesses will be promoted on the Carbon Quids smartphone app and website and in publicity for the scheme.

Cllr Michael Filer, Bournemouth council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “We want to encourage as many Bournemouth retailers as possible to be part of the scheme.

“Carbon Quids works on an incentive based system to encourage more sustainable forms of travel such as walking, cycling, car-sharing or using public transport.

“It provides benefits to participating employers, their employees and the town itself but more widely, the retail sector.

“We’d love to hear from local retailers to see how they can get involved.”

Simon Collingwood, associate director of Counter Context, the company which developed Carbon Quids said: “Carbon Quids is a fantastic initiative which encourages behaviour change and rewards people for travelling in a sustainable way.

“The more local retailers who sign up to the scheme, the more offers we have to encourage people to become members and travel sustainably.

“Retailers will benefit from the initiative as Carbon Quids offers free advertising and promotion and encourages its members to shop locally.”

The 12-month scheme supports Bournemouth’s Getting About initiative to support sustainable transport.

A glaring omission from the article is how much this scheme is going to cost the taxpayer. They have also got involved with a car sharing scheme which will also cost money.
.
Is it any wonder that the Council has no money to pay its staff a living wage when they keep handing over money to tin pot little companies to spend on projects of little value or benefit.

All this green rubbish has gone on long enough and cost us thousands every year, its the biggest scam going, arctic ice is at its highest levels for the last 36 years completely debunking the climate change scaremongers, lets get back to normal , stop this scam in its tracks and save a fortune on carbon taxes and all the other green rubbish that we've all be brainwashed about.

I would imagine virtually every single motorist in Bournemouth is counting on this hapless 'green/liberal' Councillor not being returned to office in 2015.

Every time that a library picture of Councillor Filer appears in an Echo article you just know our money is being poured away on yet another well out of date and ludicrous anti-motorist scheme that virtually nobody in the town actually wants!

To all his Council ward supporters; Please do your bit for all this 'carbon stopping' nonsense by not going to the poll station in your car (or by any other means) next year!

If you are referring to the close links between this 'carbon quids' idea (and not a few other similar schemes) and the apparently democratically unaccountable but unusually influential Bournemouth 2026 outfit, some commentators will already be aware.

What a foolish statement by yet another councillor, who's council car park is full of cars, and the mayors car who is needed for any distance over 100 meters, is he completely stupid or did he have training to be such a fool. I have paid for my car like many others , including the tax and VAT etc on the fuel, and I/we intend to use it whenever we like .
Or does his statement only refer to using the free car parks out of the town centre, otherwise there would be a marked downturn in income from your overpriced car parks.
Goodness me, and we tax payers pay for these people to manage our towns. Pepa Pig could do a better job!

I think its a forgone conclusion that the Filers will be returned to office in 2015. They certainly won't give up the £40,000 + a year they claim in allowances without a fight.
