SEVEN weeks of roadworks on one of Bournemouth’s busiest roads are due to get fully under way today.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays as a massive scheme to improve cycling, walking and bus travel along Castle Lane West is carried out.

The project will see continental-style cycle lanes created and pavements widened, along with a new traffic light junction, improved crossings and a new road surface.

Work will centre on the East Way junction and aims to give hundreds of children a safer route to school.

Motorists will have to contend with three-way temporary traffic lights for the next three weeks and a temporary pedestrian crossing will be placed at the Castle Lane West and East Way junction.

East Way will be closed to traffic at its junction with Castle Lane West between July 25 and August 30.

During that time, traffic travelling along Castle Lane West will be diverted via Charminster Road.

Ian Kalra, head of trans-portation services at Bourne-mouth council, said: “We acknowledge this is a heavily-used route and there may be some delays while works are under way.

“However, when complete these measures will enhance the overall environment and provide communities with better options for how they travel to work, school and the shops.

“In the meantime we would urge users to bear with us and where possible find alternative routes during these three weeks.”

Bournemouth council secured additional government funding to upgrade cycling and public transport routes.

Councillor Michael Filer, cabinet member for transport said: “Castle Lane West has been identified as a key commuter route for schools and work places.

“We want to ensure that all pedestrians and cyclists feel confident when travelling in and around this area, as well as encouraging others to travel more sustainably and lead a healthier lifestyle.”
