A STAR was born when a talented 10-year-old scooped one of the top prizes at the Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival.

Rosie Gill has been playing the harp for just two years but that didn’t stop her sweeping aside the opposition to take the title of Minns Young Musician of the Year.

The Hordle Primary School pupil is the youngest to have won the title in its history, prompting respected adjudicator Peter Stark to praise a “most remarkable performance from a prodigious child.”

She competed against four other under 18s in the invitation-only event after winning the festival’s Harp class.

Rosie, also an accomplished pianist, won a trophy almost as big as her, £250 of Minns Music vouchers and £250 for her school.

Her mum, Caroline, and dad, Robbie, were delighted with her performance and said they are still in shock.

“We felt honoured that she had been asked to be in the competition so for her to win it was amazing – we are elated” said Caroline.

The youngster competed against a pianist, two violinists and an oboe player Rosie, who lives in Everton Road, Hordle, is taught by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Harpist Eluned Pierce.
