ORGANISERS of this year’s Bournemouth Air Festival have unveiled details of some of the main attractions.

A new crowd-puller for 2014 is the world’s first jet-powered bomber, the Canberra.

And there will be a unique chance to see two Lancaster bombers flying together when a Canadian Lancaster joins the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Festival organisers have also released the timings for the Red Arrows’ four appearances at the festival. The 2014 festival, supported by Mouchel and City Fibre, features an expanded Night Air programme sponsored by Corona and a number of new aircraft.

The Mid Air Squadron Canberrra XH134 joined the RAF in 1951 as the first jet-powered bomber. It is believed to be the world’s longest-serving bomber, having been retired from active duty in 2006. It is the only airworthy Canberra of its type in the world.

Owner Mike Davis said: “The Midair Squadron is an expertly managed passion and we’re really looking forward to bringing an aura of classic elegance to the skies of Bournemouth.”

The Red Arrows will be displaying on all four days of the festival, August 28-31. They will perform on Thursday at 3.15pm, Friday at 3pm, Saturday at 4.35pm and Sunday at 12.10pm.

The RAF will be sending its Eurofighter Typhoon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as its Tutor and Tucano training aircraft.

The sight of two Lancaster bombers, as the Canadian Lancaster joins the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, is due to be a highlight of the festival and a meeting unlikely to happen again. There will be a host of armed forces helicopters, including the Royal Navy Merlin and for the first time, a Lynx and Wildcat pairing, with the Army Lynx and RAF Chinook flying every day.

Bournemouth favourite the Miss Demeanour flies on Friday and Saturday, while the Flying Fortress SallyB performs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Avro Vulcan displays on Saturday. A longer dusk display starts at 7.15pm, Thursday to Saturday, and includes a sunset display by the Blades on Friday and Saturday. O’Brien’s Flying Circus and the Twister Duo will set the skies alight in a display sponsored by the Miramar Hotel, while the Red Devils Parachute Team, sponsored by the Patrons 100 Club, will finish the evening line-up.

Air festival director Jon Weaver said: “This year’s line-up is really ambitious. It’s got festival favourites, force and civilian teams, fast jets, display teams and pyrotechnics.”
