INVESTIGATIONS are continuing after suspected subsidence damaged part of a busy road in Christchurch.

Highways officials are carrying out investigations on the B3059 Purewell Cross Road, just before the Stony Lane roundabout after part of the road was affected this week.

Dorset County Council, who is responsible for highways in Christchurch, is continuing the work to repair the damage and investigate the cause.

A spokesperson said workmen were currently on site, digging the road and that there appears to be ‘some kind of hollow’ underneath.

Officers are hopeful the issue may have been caused by movement in the road following the wet winter weather.

The section of the road has been cordoned off while investigations continue.

Cllr Nick Geary, lead member for transportation at Christchurch council, said he had alerted the authority to the issue a couple of weeks ago.

He said there had been a ‘depression’ in the carriageway and the council had visited to temporarily repair the road twice before they cordoned it off this week.

“I thought it could be dangerous so was pleased to see them take action almost immediately. But although they repaired it temporarily it seems the situation is slightly more complicated, hence their investigations to find out exactly what happened”, he added.
