A GROOM-TO-BE who assaulted an air hostess on the flight home from his stag do has been spared jail.

Peter Thompson, of Cranbrook Road, Poole, was told he could face prison after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a flight attendant and being drunk during a Ryanair flight from Alicante to Bournemouth on May 4.

The air hostess, Agnieszla Kowalczyk, had accused Thompson of slapping her bottom after saying she was very pretty and that he loved her.

Thompson, who is due to get married in August, claimed he had flailed his arms to express himself and accidentally made contact with the stewardess as she walked past.

Yesterday at Bournemouth Magistrates Court, James Moore, defending, described his client as an “exuberant” and “bubbly” man who was “in no way nasty”.

Mr Moore said Thompson was first told about the allegation after he was approached by a senior member of the cabin crew.

He said: “He immediately said sorry and took his seat on the plane.”

Urging the judge to take into account his positive character references, Mr Moore added: “This is a man who has a history of working with charities.

“He was fully open and honest with the police.”

The court heard Thompson, who teaches at a language school, had received character references from his brother, who is a former senior police officer, his fiancé and boss, as well as the manager at a charity organisation where he volunteers.

Sentencing Thompson for both charges, district judge Stephen Nicholls said: “I accept this incident was very much a one-off incident and was out of character.”

Thompson was handed a community order to carry out 120 hours unpaid work. The 48-year-old was also ordered to pay the victim £100 in compensation, costs of £80 and a victim surcharge of £60.

It's the authorities who need to go to jail for wasting so much time and money on this case! Disgusting they allowed it to go to court when this is a classic event if a woman trying to claim compensation in my eyes. She should be ashamed of herself for allowing a normal guy to be put through hell simply because he had a bit to much to drink on his stag do!
Everyday there are cases of innocent men and women going to court for the pettiest of things yet real criminals are walking the streets. Isn't it about time money was spent on police patrols, neighbourhood safety, etc etc etc! Truely disgusting this man had to go through this court process.

As a female I would not find such behaviour offensive, I would just tell the person I did not like his behaviour, and walk away. So please don't count me in that 99%. But that's the trouble now a days people are only to quick to judge.

The case was in a criminal court so he's been prosecuted, not sued. We're also in the 21st century now, standards have changed drastically in the two generations that I've been alive, sometimes making things better, sometimes worse. Yes, this is the crown prosecution service prosecuting, not the woman taking him to court. In general ALL violent offences should be punished with a custodial sentence, but the question is - was this violence? If it was just a "pat", then I think the way to deal with it is simply to tell him to stop doing it. Continued touching or attempts to touch would result in the police meeting the flight when it landed.

I agree but those who simply brush it off as trivial would react a lot differently if it was their partner who got the slap from a drunk. Drinking to much is no excuse and shows how standards have dropped if a stranger has to put up with vulgar behaviour from such people. I pity woman these days, still considered fair game and 2nd class by some.

Reading between the lines is dangerous but it seems to me what we have here is a loud and drunk group of men in a enclosed space with other passengers whose boorish behaviour culminated in the ringleader slapping a member of staff on the backside. How is it double standards?

A woman's body is her own and nobody has the right to touch it without her permission. She has every right to dress up on a night out, wear a bikini on a beach or indeed do her job, those things are her choices, being groaped by a stranger is not.

We can all choose what we read, watch, hear those things we can manage when it comes to being offended, very different to being slapped or groaped, the act is both patronising and belittling, trivialising it makes this type of misogynistic behaviour seemingly acceptable.

That is why there has to be boundaries.

Richard Branson must take some of the blame too. When he launched virgin airlines he promoted the fact he had the hottest stewardesses around, some of his adverts were very risque for their overt sexuality.
Of course all the other airlines went the same way, hiring the scorchist of hotties.
Add to that the booze trolly being wheeled out as soon as the plane has taken off and there you have it.
A recipe for sexual tension of nuclear proportions.
It was bound to end in disaster.

We had an ECKO Hostess in our house and that was hot, nobody slapped that.
There's a thought!

It's just asking for **** and admiration to boil over sometimes. If they used overweight over 50's school dinner lady types then this sort of incident would never happen.
So your saying that working class ladies,of a certain age Are unlikely to have their dignity compromised .I think this is the final time you get your daily fix of attention .you really are a very unpleasant grubby person?Sat in some sticky bed sit wondering why your eating chips with curry sauce with a lav roll at your side
Er......yes.
Attention moledung? You are far superior than me at seeking it.
Bed sit, no.
Chips, no.
Curry sauce no, I buy the full curry not just a sauce.
Lav roll? You must get through 3 a day wiping away the **** that comes out your mouth.
Your obsession with Curry and toilet paper goes someway to explaining the excrement you spout
