Two police officers hurt and tasers used after police pursuit leaves trail of destruction in Winton
TWO police officers were injured and tasers used when a police pursuit came to an end in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The drama unfolded when a driver left a trail of devastation after losing control of a car during the pursuit.
Parked cars were wrecked, a lamppost knocked over and a wall was knocked down during the incident.
Two occupants of a second vehicle were also hurt.
Residents in Edgehill Road in Winton were woken by a loud bang and flashing lights at 1am.
Royal Mail worker Michael Hargadon told the Daily Echo: “We were sound asleep when there was suddenly a very loud bang.
“I looked out of the window and saw police getting two men out of a car that had smashed into both mine and my wife’s cars which were parked at the front of the house.
“When I went outside I could see that a lamppost had been completely uprooted and flown about 50 yards down the road.”
Mr Hargadon said police told him the silver VW Passat with two occupants had also been involved in a collision with a taxi.
Mr Hargadon’s Ford Mondeo and wife Lesley’s Toyota Yaris both suffered extensive damage. A gate post went through the front window of a neighbouring property.
Mr Hargadon added: “We had our two grandchildren aged seven and eight staying with us and they managed to sleep through the whole thing.”
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “At 12.42am a car failed to stop for officers along Wallisdown Road in Bournemouth.
“Immediately after, this vehicle collided with another car in Edgehill Road. The driver of this second car and the female passenger received minor injuries in the collision. The ambulance service also attended to assist all parties involved.
“Street furniture was damaged during the road traffic collision and the local authority has been made aware. A nearby house and two vehicles also sustained damage because of the impact and the subsequent debris.”
A 24-year-old Ferndown man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences, taking a motor vehicle without consent and assaulting a police officer and a 23-year-old Bournemouth man has been arrested on suspicion of taking a motor vehicle without consent. Both men are assisting officers with their enquiries.
The police spokesman confirmed tasers were deployed during the arrests and said specialist officers are involved in the investigation into the alleged offences.
Safer Neighbourhood officers are patrolling the area to reassure the public. Further enquiries are being made in the locality.
