Plastic bag charge plans welcomed by litter campaigners

Bournemouth Echo: WELCOME MOVE: Plastic bag campaigners WELCOME MOVE: Plastic bag campaigners

CAMPAIGNERS fighting littering in Dorset have welcomed government plans to charge for plastic bags – one of the county’s most commonly littered items.

The Dorset Campaign Against Litter has hailed the expected 5p per bag charge, set to come in next year, as “good news for our countryside, towns and environment overall”.

The spokesman added: “They frequently crop up during litter picks and can cause serious harm to animals and sea creatures.”

Speaking at the campaign group’s meeting last week Marten Gregory of the Dorset Waste Partnership added his endorsement.

“Anything which reduces the amount we take to landfill has got to be a positive step,” he added.

And about time too! I get sick to death of seeing litter everywhere and once on seeing a bag moving around, I found a baby rabbit inside a bag at Badbury Rings - it couldn't untangle itself to get out and could have died - and before those among us who cry that there are too many wild rabbits - that may be so, but it's no way to deal with them :o(

If I'm forced to pay 5p for a bag then I will do. It will be an M and S one as they are the best quality, I shall then use it in tesco.

To be honest id pay 5p a bag too. Not going to make any difference to me. Rather get my shopping home in one piece rather than have apples rolling down the road.

I will not pay for a carrier bag. If the money goes to a charity, I wish to choose which charities I support. If I spend a small fortune in a shop and have no bags with me (perhaps impulse buying), I do not want extra money adding to my bill. The responsible people being punished for the irresponsibles actions yet again!
