Pigeon put to sleep after being badly injured by teenagers wielding catapult

A PIGEON has been put down after being struck by a heavy lead weight fired from a catapult in Wimborne.

The wild bird was seen covered in blood after being fired at by teenage boys in the Egdon Drive area, an RSPCA spokesperson said.

Inspectors from the organisation are appealing for more information about the incident, which took place at around 6pm on Thursday, May 29.

It is believed the bird was struck by a 20-gram heavy lead weight by two teenage boys, aged around 15.

Intentionally killing or injuring a wild bird is a crime under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and can result in a fine of up to £5,000 and six months imprisonment.

RSPCA animal welfare officer Sue Brooks said: “This poor feral pigeon suffered heavy blows to its beak and chest and was badly injured in the attack.

“Sadly the damage to the bird’s lower beak was so severe it meant it could no longer eat or drink so it had to be put to sleep.

“The pigeon was fatally injured and covered in blood, it would have been a distressing incident for the kind member of the public who picked it up and reported it to us.

"Pigeons exist in close contact to people on a daily basis and are generally an accepted part of towns and cities in Britain but occasionally we do get reports of incidents in which they are attacked - there is no excuse for causing such suffering whatsoever. We would like to remind people that these attacks are illegal.

"We are appealing for anyone with information about the attack on May 29 to come forward.”

She added: "Shooting of pets or birds with different weapons seems to be increasing but it causes a great deal of distress and even death to the animals involved, which was the case here.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call the RSPCA inspector line on 0300 123 8018.

So is it that all the country folk that go shooting rabbits and pigeons are breaking the law as the story states RSPCA says that it is illegal and carries stiff penalties, but I thought that there are some animals that are considered vermin, so there for could be shot !!!

Hope these kids are caught before they decide to 'have a laugh' by firing their catapult at a human being next. Then they really will be in trouble.

Luckily bird deaths by catapult are very rare, the bigger issue is the amount of bird deaths caused by domestic cats, especially at this time of year when nests of fledglings are easy targets.

that will dampen their fun once someone steps forward saying they know who's kid on their road just got a brand new catapult toy for his birthday.

reporting him and having his parents pay a potential £5,000 for his horrible moral fibre, i would love to see how their little lovely child, (whom they gave the money to for this catapult/provided him with) will be seen.

it isnt always the fault of the parents, you can teach a child right from wrong until your jaw drops off, but some children are just lost causes. then there are some parents who do a half-assed job, give in to "mummy please!" all the time. buying movies, games etc which are unsuitable for them to be playing.

most kids know not to recreate things they see in the media, and not to replicate it, but sadly others get deluded in that imagination where you can fight and use actual weapons but not get hurt.

to be honest though, if your child plays violent video games, watched violent movies, or anything related to violence, then proceeds to ask you to get them a catapult/slingshot or you see them going around with one, its time to intervene before it gets out of hand.

now its likely to cost them thousands, i hope they dont ignore the warning signs next time. and im pretty sure any violence related media will be banished now, while their friends go on and play without them. that is torture to a teenager, thats for sure

It is not illegal to shoot pigeons for certain purposes on your own land. Discharging a weapon on someone else's land is against the law though.

Was the pigeon really "put to sleep"? Why not just cut off its head with tinsnips or garden sheers? I can't see the point in using a drug when it can be killed so swiftly by mechanical means.

Shooting a bird to kill it cleanly is one thing (not that I agree with it anyway) - but to deliberately injure the bird and leave it writhing in agony and bleeding heavily is quite another.

I doubt the catapult was a present or even paid for. Some kids make their own - and in my own road we have had several cases of horrible pre-teenage boys firing stones and lead balls at windows, cars and even cats for their apparent amusement - and what gets done about it? Nothing whatsoever, because no one will report them for fear of having their own windows put out!

In Hamworthy we are supposed to have regular beat patrols on foot - but I cannot remember the last time I saw a copper walking around in the evenings when the trouble starts. Wandering the streets at 2pm is a waste of time, since most of the trouble makers are in school and I have NEVER seen a foot patrol at weekends or in school holidays either ........

Years ago I actually caught two little scumbags doing exactly the same thing to a poor innocent tiny kitten, cowering terrified under a garden hedge.
I had no hesitation in grabbing the 2 little scrotes by the scruffs of their necks and frog-marching them back to their homes for the [parents to deal with and then promptly contacting the police with all the details.
I would certainly have no hesitation in doing it again.

When I were a lad I knew some kids that used to catapult ducks down the river. But back then child violence was caused by horror comics. Closely followed by video nasties a few years later. I still can't quite remember how the country recovered from that moral catastrophe
