A CARE home in Swanage ordered to improve by a government watchdog is now meeting national standards.

As reported in the Echo on May 15, Gainsborough Care and Nursing Home, Ulwell Road, was given a warning notice for mismanagement of medication by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an inspection in February.

The report said that the home’s management had a “major impact” on residents.

A copy of the latest CQC report, following an inspection on May 14, which has not yet been published on the CQC website, was forwarded to the Echo by the home.

The report said: “We found that recent improvements have been made to the way medicines were managed and handled in the home, and that the warning notice has been met.”

Operations director Caroline Dale said: “The inspector was particularly impressed with the way in which we manage medication that is given to people at a time when they require it and confirmed that all records were well kept and that medicines were stored safely.”

Following a £1million investment to reopen and refurbish the home, it was registered with the CQC for nursing care in addition to the existing registration for residential care.

A spokesman for the home said CQC’s unannounced visit happened on the same as the nursing provisions commenced.

He added: “In light of this being the first day of nursing provision at Gainsborough Care and Nursing Home there were extenuating circumstances.”
