Bournemouth’s second Starbucks store to open on Richmond Hill in July, creating 20 new jobs

Bournemouth Echo: BARISTA: Empty units on Richmond Hil that will soon house another branch of Starbucks BARISTA: Empty units on Richmond Hil that will soon house another branch of Starbucks

BOURNEMOUTH’S second Starbucks store will open in July, creating up to 20 new jobs in the town.

The coffee shop giant has planning permission to convert two empty units on Richmond Hill into a new cafe with an outdoor seating area.

Building work on converting the former Bournemouth Jeans store and Barroccoa coffee shop is due to start imminently.

A Starbucks spokesman said: “We can confirm that a new Starbucks store will open on Richmond Hill in Bournemouth in July, in partnership with Starbucks franchisee 23.5 Degrees.

“This store will create around 15 to 20 jobs for the local area and is the tenth store to be opened by 23.5 Degrees in the south west region. We are proud of our partnership with 23.5 Degrees, bringing great coffee and exciting employment opportunities to communities like Bournemouth.”

Central ward councillor David Smith said: “Anything that draws customers up Richmond Hill to support the businesses there will be useful. It will bring a nice ambience to the town centre and it’s nice to see empty shops being brought back to life.”

The Richmond Hill premises will be the second Starbucks in Bournemouth Town Centre. There is also one at the Triangle and one just outside the town centre in Westbourne.

This Westbourne branch was the scene of a protest in 2012, when demonstrators gathered outside to object at the Starbucks’ tax avoidance practices.

Following the controversy surrounding their tax arrangement, Starbucks suffered a drop in UK sales and it opted to axe loss-making coffee shops.

Oh goody! We're just SO desperately short of Coffee shops in that area! There's only four or five within 75 yards, and that's simply not enough.

Why give up perfectly good retail space to a company that's known for avoiding paying tax? Just another way of corporatising town centres.. Not good news at all.

There are dozens of empty units clustered around this area, Westover Road, Burlington Arcade, Dalkeith Arcade, etc. One unit with yet another Starschmuck's in it will not affect anything, as there are loads of other empty ones to choose from!

Does Bournemouth really need another coffee shop ? At least Starbucks have now moved their European HQ to the UK so will be paying more in UK taxes.

I find it amazing how the councillor thinks it is so good that another Starbucks hits town. Whilst other towns are trying to get rid of Tesco, Starbucks etc, we welcome them!

In a few years the council will add into the Town Plan vision - let's support independent traders- when it's too late

So, Cllr. David Smith thinks Starbucks will bring "a nice ambience to the town centre" and that "t’s nice to see empty shops being brought back to life.”
Its also so very nice when large corporations pay the tax they should, and its even nicer when Cllrs. make a stand on behalf of the people they represent to ensure that corporations pay their way.....but then it would be a whole lot nicer if we had Councillors that had a brain cell between them without one brain cell being inhibitory...so very nice..

slowly but surely all originality and quirkiness is sucked out of life til we all end up the same bland, unthinking , superficial , multi-national ruled sheeple, and some people can't even see why that is so tragic. Suggest they visit one of the few remaining towns where local, individual shops and cafes remain and see why those places have a unique character rather than a could be anywhere but if we stick up a few pictures of Italy / America/ Anywhere "exotic" inside we'll fool people to feeling trendy! sad,sad,sad....
